HLL: “No Muschamp news for now” Bevo Beat

According to the folks in Texas, Will Muschamp isn’t going anywhere:
No Muschamp news for now.
The rumors that defensive coordinator and Texas coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp is heading to Tennessee are in full force.
But people around the Longhorn athletic department aren’t worried.
One member of the Longhorns’ athletic staff said that “Muschamp was in the office yesterday and everything seemed normal. He talked about recruiting our players and our future. There was no mention of Tennessee.”
Another source said, “It would be very surprising if he left.”
Muschamp said a week ago that he was happy at Texas.
A month ago he said that every time one of these rumors pops up he runs down to Texas coach Mack Brown’s office and says that there is nothing to worry about.
According to a Knoxville News Sentinel reporter, Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton will be meeting with the media at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard time.

Not sure what to say yet…
Yesterday evening as I was reading about Pete Carroll’s departure from USC, I thought to myself, “gee, I hope they don’t come after Kiffin.” I dismissed this, however, due to the fact that it just didn’t make sense to me that something like that would happen.
Well, apparently it made sense to USC…
Like me, ESPN’s Pat Forde is a bit shocked, and isn’t quite sure how this is going to work out for any of the parties involved.
I suppose that is what I get for spending the evening falling asleep on the couch watching Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe…
I feel like I should say something on the departure of Lane Kiffin, but at this point it almost seems premature. Obviously, this is going to have a hugely negative impact on not only short-term but perhaps the long-term health of the Tennessee football program. Beyond that, however, I am really not sure what to think yet and the last thing I want to do is to rush to judgment. Contemplative and plodding—that’s always been my mantra.
Basilio »”>Tony Basilio, however, already has his thoughts up for all to read, with which I don’t necessarily disagree. The students on campus have also spoken—via the Rock (**NSFW: Language). Of course, I can hardly blame them. Tony Barnhart, on the other hand, is just sad—for Tennessee and for the game of college football.
In the meantime, (and in an attempt to be positive) I suppose I would be remiss if I did not take a brief moment to welcome and send best wishes to the 22nd Head Football Coach at Tennessee, Interim Head Coach Kippy Brown. I’m not sure this is what he signed on for, but I do wish him all the best and look forward to hearing from him in the coming weeks.
Coach Brown, we’re all behind you and the team…
In the meantime, I have a feeling that Smiling Mike Hamilton is doing anything but smiling right now, and I expect that we will be hearing from him, and that right soon.
More to come…

HLL: NY Times Reports NCAA Investigating “Vol Hostesses”

Okay, this pretty much sucks…
As the Vol Ambassador pointed out earlier today here on the Gate, according to the New York Times (which, as a general rule, avoids simply making stuff up), the NCAA is currently engaged in a wide-reaching investigation of recruiting at Tennessee under Lane Kiffin, with an emphasis on the use of the so-called “Vol Hostesses,” (with particular attention being paid to Hostess Lacey Earps), who routinely accompany recruits on visits to campus. This investigation was confirmed by Mike Hamilton, though he declined to comment on the substance , and the UTAD has since issued an official statement.
The real interest appears to be trips taken by some of the Vol Hostesses to watch potential recruits play as high schoolers. These visits, especially if they result in direct communications related to the recruiting of the athlete are potentially barred under NCAA regulations. Times reporters Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans noted instances where Vol Hostesses had traveled as distance up to 200 or more miles to see recruits play, and had occasionally exchanged text messages with potential recruits.
As official representatives of the UT Athletic Department, contact by these Hostesses could lead to secondary violations, even if the contact was not sanctioned by athletic department officials.
Hostess Gate
Ok. So by now you’ve already experienced your mini-meltdown over the coaching changes. If you’re anything like me, you probably went thermo-nuclear when you found out that not only is the NCAA “probing” (ha, I know) the situation with our hostesses, but that they’re contacting our recruits. Fret not. The rumor mill has produced the following information:
1. Kiffin and staff were aware of this after the fact, but did not ask the hostesses to attend the game.
2. The hostess at the center of the controversy is originally from South Carolina and went home with some of her friends for the weekend. While there, they attended Lattimore’s game. Apparently they’re facebook friends.
Irrespective of how this turns out, this is not a good development this late in the recruiting game. Maybe I’m drinking the orange Kool-aid, but something about this isn’t right. I get Wilson going to LSU and his comments recently should dismiss any notions of foul play there. What I don’t like is that Gran left and the next day Luc commits to FSU, then Lattimore commits to SC and the NCAA comes knocking. There are a lot of adjectives being thrown around the message boards to describe Gran, but I’m not sure what actually happened to him. As far as I can tell, it was too hot in the kitchen for him. I’m ok with that. I like the idea that our staff is too intense for some people. Wes Rucker put it best in saying we have a great administration, a ton of money, and a hungry fan base. Will be fine.
This thing with the hostesses, though, probably looks way worse than it really is. Were the rules bent? Maybe, maybe not. Will there be another Kiffin rule passed in the offseason in response? You bet.
About all you have to say…”Job Well Done!”

On the back of Jonathan Crompton’s 220 passing yards and Montario Hardesty’s 179 yards on the ground, Lane Kiffin’s Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 30-24 in overtime and improved to 7-5 on the season and earned a 2nd place finish in the SEC East behind the Florida Gators.
More importantly in the minds of some, the Vols extended “the streak” to 25 years since yearly opponent Kentucky last beat the Vols.
To put that in perspective, the last time that Wildcats beat the Vols, I was 8 years old…
The Vols all-time record against the Wildcats in football? An impressive 73-23-9 in 105 meetings.
Urban Meyer to Notre Dame?
Wait. Before you pop the champagne corks, let me flush this one out.
I only have one source have two sources saying that Urban is heading out.
Here are some things to consider, though.
1. Urban Meyer’s buyout clause is only $500,000. Notre Dame sneezes at that kind of money when it comes to buying championships coaches.
2. Urban may have suggested, by implication, that Notre Dame is his dream job. That comes from a guy who says “I’m not leaving X for anywhere” and actually means “The movers came last weekend and my house is empty.” He wants that job.
3. Urban Meyer>Bob Stoops. Do you really want to debate this one? Fine. Talk to the Honorable Corrine Brown.
4. $50,000,000 over 10 years or $25,000,000 over 5 years. Yeah, that’s a five million a year base salary. Plus, a Nike Contract, three “projects” (read: JUCO players), and $1.2 m for a national championship. Urban’s current base salary: $4m. [Editor's note: states secrets privilege invoked, information redacted]
5. The SEC is getting crowded. Urban knows he can count on Kiffin, Richt, and Surrier every year and plays the odds on getting Saban, Nutt, or Miles every other year. Kiffin is hellbent on crushing Meyer and he knows it. There’s nothing quite as unsettling as knowing that someone has your number.
What does this mean? Well a few things.
1. I will be in Neyland next year for the Florida game. Florida – Tebow and Meyer= Ole Miss. Year Two of the Reign of Kiffin at home against my generation’s most hated rival? I’m bringing my Florida fans with me. I may even buy their tickets for this one.
2. Bob Stoops is going to have some ’splaining to do. It’s like when you try to upgrade your dating profile at your fiancee’s expense. You usually end up on the couch. You may end up single.
3. Pete Carroll better have this year’s ND game edited and made into a commemorative DVD.
4. The Tennesse-Notre Dame rivalry is back. With a vengeance.
5. Or I am completely and totally wrong on all of these points and Brian Kelly will be the next head coach of Notre Dame.

Giving Respect Where Respect is Due

It pretty much goes without saying that Jonathan Crompton’s journey as the Tennessee Volunteers’ quarterback been a long and arduous one. This Saturday, that journey moves one step closer to ending.
This weekend’s contest against Vanderbilt will be Crompton’s final home game for the orange and white and will be his one last chance to show the denizens of Neyland Stadium just how committed he has been to the fortunes of Tennessee football, how dedicated he has been to success as both a player and a leader, how much he has worked to become someone the Vols and their fans could be proud of.
It also represents the last time—perhaps the only time—for Tennessee fans of every stripe to show him just how much they appreciate him for what he has done.

Thus, I hope that all of you who make the trek to the game on Saturday will consider doing a little something special to show Crompton that we as the Vol Nation do appreciate his hard work, his effort, and his loyalty to the University of Tennessee.
I think it is the least that we as a fanbase can do.
In recognition of this, a special group has been formed on Facebook to celebrate Crompton’s contribution to Tennessee Football and to hopefully do a little something special for him on the Vol Walk this weekend.
For those of you out there who don’t recall, Crompton received death threats last season due to the Vols’ implosion. Then, early this season, there were many who, again, questioned his abilities (including yours truly, I’m sad to say) and openly called for Lane Kiffin to bench the Vol senior in favor of reserve quarterback Nick Stephens. This ignores the furor on the various chat boards. This young man had to endure all of this while still trying to work toward winning games. To Lane Kiffin’s credit, he stuck to his guns and was proven to have made a smart decision when Crompton had his coming out party against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Jonathan Crompton has played under four different offensive systems, and has had to re-learn everything throughout his entire time at Tennessee. Yet, rather than complain or just give up, Crompton stuck it out despite his doubters. He kept working, kept trying, kept pushing to be better. Even though it probably took him a bit longer than he wished it had, he finally found that success that had so eluded him. What’s more, in the process of attaining his goal, he gave the new era of Tennessee Football a fighting chance for respectability in its first year.
Despite his successes this season, it is doubtful that Jonathan Crompton will ever be remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks to wear the orange. With names like Peyton Manning, Andy Kelly, and Heath Shuler in the lineage, that is understandable. Still, in many ways, Crompton has shown more determination, more perseverance, and more heart than any Tennessee quarterback in the modern era.
I think that means something.
Thus, I encourage all of you to not only join the Facebook group honoring Crompton’s contribution to Tennessee Football, but to also maybe do a little something on your own this Saturday as he makes his final Vol Walk toward Neyland Stadium—maybe a sign, maybe a salute, maybe a kind word.
In light of the events of the past week and the misdeeds of some of the Volunteers, I think Crompton’s type of dedication and sacrifice stands out all the more.
All I can do is to say that I am proud that Crompton wore the orange…
