Lipitor For Sale, On the back of Jonathan Crompton’s 220 passing yards and Montario Hardesty’s 179 yards on the ground, Lane Kiffin’s Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 30-24 in overtime and improved to 7-5 on the season and earned a 2nd place finish in the SEC East behind the Florida Gators.
More importantly in the minds of some, the Vols extended “the streak” to 25 years since yearly opponent Kentucky last beat the Vols.
To put that in perspective, the last time that Wildcats beat the Vols, I was 8 years old…
The Vols all-time record against the Wildcats in football? An impressive 73-23-9 in 105 meetings.
This season wasn’t always pretty, it wasn’t always simple, and it definitely wasn’t always easy, but somehow the Vols managed to find a way to do what it took to return the Big Orange back to national relevance and back to the conversation of contenders in SEC East. Along the way, they took a few shots to the head. They experienced more than their share of adversity. Versus both the Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide—who are both undefeated and will meet in the SEC Championship Game this coming Saturday—they went down swinging, losing to the two teams by a combined total of twelve points.
Now, the Vols sit and wait, hoping that their new look and strong performance this season will earn them a shot in a solid bowl—hopefully the New Years Day Outback Bowl.
At any rate, the Vols have exceeded the expectations of many and along the way made football fun for Tennessee fans once more. Obviously, there remains much room for improvement, but for now the Vols have earned the right to take a moment and reflect on a job well done.
Hats off to the Vols and the Tennessee Coaching staff for an outstanding and exciting regular season!
The good news is that the season isn’t over, not yet…

What’s more, and somewhat to my surprise, it appears that the new policy even applies to Urban Meyer. The basis for these conclusions? Mike Slive’s decision to fine Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer $30,000 for criticizing the officiating during the Gators’ game against the Georgia Bulldogs, which was announced via an official release earlier today.
I am sure that Jeremy Foley will be lodging a strongly worded protest shortly, demanding that Lane Kiffin apologize for not being fined before Meyer…
So this raises a question: can you get fined for criticizing the fine you got tacked with for criticizing the officials? I wonder if we will find out? That could be highly entertaining.
At any rate, I guess we now know that Mike Slive actually meant what he said when he declared himself the High Inquisitor of the SEC. Of course, no one expects the Spanish Inquisition…

Although I am glad to see that Slive brought Meyer to task, I still find it a bit troublesome that Slive would rather focus on penalizing coaches for criticizing bad officiating rather than spending his time finding and/or training better officials. I find it odd that Slive and, presumably SEC head of football officiating Rogers Redding, feel a few off-handed comments from a coach about how the officiating in a given game was lousy—especially when the media and commentators absolutely love any opportunity they have to make such criticisms—are a threat to the sanctity of the SEC.
Me thinks he doth protest too much…
It seems to me by making an issue of the whole thing it just makes it that much more visible and gives the media and bloggers like yours truly one more thing to talk about. Likely as not, no one would be even thinking about Meyer’s comments any longer were it not for Slive’s new policy of coaching Newspeak. But then again, no ever accused Slive of being all that thoughtful…
…except when it comes to revenue.

Comments, Explanations, and Excuses
Here are the high-points of the week's changes:
Minimal Changes near the top:
Despite nearly getting beat by my Tennessee Volunteers (NR), the Alabama Crimson Tide (1) remains atop my ballot. The same is true for the Florida Gators (3) who were seriously tested by the Mississippi State Bulldogs (NR). The only changes near the top of my poll come in the form of the Iowa Hawkeyes (6) jumping both the Penn State Nittany Lions (7) and the LSU Tigers (8). This is not due to the fact that I think that Penn State or LSU were disappointing this weekend, but rather represents a tip of the hat to the Hawkeyes who are now 8-0 for the first time in school history. Making it to 8-0 has to count for something (even if it has been ugly).
The Slide and Shuffle:
The only other real changes this week occur as the result of the Miami Hurricanes (19) upset lost to the Clemson Tigers (NR) which never should have happened, and the losses of both the Kansas Jayhawks (NR) and the Texas Tech Red Raiders (NR) to the Oklahoma Sooners (20) and the Texas A&M Aggies (NR) respectively. And Texas Tech should be ashamed of themselves…
Returners & First Timers:
The new faces this week include the return of the West Virginia Mountaineers (25) and the debut of the Arizona Wildcats (24) for the first time this season. Why are they the new faces this week? Well, they, … uhhh … won some games and stuff. I’m sure you’d be amazed by it, if you knew what it was. Suffice it to say that I was.

Having taken the time to consider my feeble attempt at ranking the powers in college football, feel free to try and convince me that I am wrong -- which is part of the way the BlogPoll is supposed to work. I promise that I will consider all insults comments.

Losing is never fun.
Erythromycin For Sale, I think that must be an axiom. If not, then it should be. Still, there are degrees of losing -- certain nuances to the old black and white world of one team wins and one team loses. The Tennessee Volunteers, their coaches, their fans, and yours truly have become increasingly more familiar with the details of these degrees of losing this season.
That is not necessarily a bad thing...
On the one hand they lost two games -- against the UCLA Bruins and the Auburn Tigers -- which, by most measuring sticks, they should have won. Each of those contests were marked by an anemic passing game and a defense which was exhausted at the end of the game.
In each of these games, the Vols offense floundered early in the game -- spotting their opponent a substantial (though not insurmountable) lead lead, only to rebound too late in the game to have enough time to mount a complete comeback.
That is the darker side of defeat.
Then there was the "moral victory" of a ten-point loss to the Florida Gators. Most folks had the Vols written off as dead before the opening kickoff -- near 30-point underdogs. Yet, when the final whistle sounded, the men in orange had defended their honor and managed to show the Gators that they would not go quietly. Though they lost by 10, Tennessee left everything on the field and left Urban Meyer answering questions about why the vaunted Gators had not annihilated the out-manned Volunteers. It was a loss -- no question about it -- but it was respectable. It marked a small step forward.
The reality in that game was, however, that though the Vols were never truly "out of it," they were likewise never truly in a position to win. They hung around till the end, but really never had what it took to get the victory. I suppose that is the sort of loss where you simply say, "well, they gave it their best."
Then there is the Alabama game...
Make no mistake about it, the Alabama Crimson Tide won the game and won it honestly. Alabama did what they had to do to win...
...but so did the Vols.
Unlike the Florida game, Tennessee was very much in a position to win and, with only a little bit of luck, everyone in Big Orange Country would be smiling right now. The Vols did not win, but they were there at the end of the game fighting for the chance to bring it home.
This represents an amazing leap forward for this program, for this team, and for this staff. This shows -- clearly in my mind -- that with a little time there are very special things to come for the Tennessee Volunteers. The future looks even brighter than it did after the Vols victory over the Georgia Bulldogs.
Are the Vols "back"? No.
...but they are getting closer.
