Here We Go Again…

Alright everyone, let’s have a little flashback now, shall we? Rewind to the day after National Signing Day, when Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin called Urban Meyer a cheater with the whole Nu’keese Richardson thievery. Remember all the hoopla and relative crap that went down after that? Well, we might be going through more of it…
You see, Kiffin spoke today at a kickoff event for a United Way campaign at Oak Ridge National Lab. As Lane is prone to do, the crowd there was pretty large and seemingly excited. And while he was speaking to said crowd, he may or may not have taken a little jab at Florida’s off-the-field criminal issues again (at 1:40). SEE HERE FOR YOURSELF.
It was an indirect jab at the Gators, and though he’s clearly talking about the accomplishments of his own team and players, there’s no doubt he’s aware of Florida’s issues and pointing those out. I just found this, and I don’t know how long it’s been up, but my guess is it won’t be long at all before this is everywhere. So call this a warning. I’m sure some people are gonna be upset that Lane’s being free with his words again. What do I think? Screw Florida.
I think Lane feels that exact same way.

Nice find. Didn’t figure you’d mind me posting the video to go along with the story…
Headlines, Links & Lies: “Ed Orgeron’s Long Lost Brother?” Edition

I can’t prove it, but I really think this guy may be Tennessee Volunteers Assistant Football Coach Ed Orgeron’s long lost butt-kickin’ brother.

I mean, they are at least cousins or something…
More to come this week as my little off-season remodeling project finally nears its end.
What the Puck?! Carolina beats the Bruins!
After last night, I’m just glad that the Canes are still alive…
My, oh my! The Carolina Hurricanes are going to the NHL Eastern Conference Finals! Led by the RBC Center’s master of the scoreboard ceremonies —the Nature Boy, Ric Flair—everyone is “WOOO-ing” in my hometown, the City of Oaks.

The Hurricanes scoreboard celebration after scoring a goal
Once again, the Carolina Hurricanes pulled off the amazing, besting the Boston Bruins 3-2 last night in Game 7 of the NHL Eastern Conference Semifinals. Once again, the decisive game of the series came down to the wire, with Carolina securing the victory off of a Scott Walker chip-shot goal with only 1:14 left in sudden death overtime. The goal scored at 18:46 on the clock in overtime by Walker (who used to play for the Bruins), sealed the game, advanced the Cardiac Canes to the NHL Eastern Conference Finals, and gave the Bruins a chance to get start on all those “honey-do” lists around the house. For some real insights on the game, check out Canes Country (which is written by people who actually understand hockey).
Up next, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Once again, I find myself loving this “hockey thing” and having something to cheer about in the off-season as I prepare for the Tennessee Volunteers’ upcoming football season. Of course, as I mentioned a few weeks ago when the Canes beat the New Jersey Devils, hockey can be a hard sell in the South, where few people ever played the game. Still, it seems to me that hockey is a natural fit in the South due to all of the things it has to offer. In reply to my last hockey post, I posted a few comments on the issue:
I think the primary reason that so few Southerners really “get” hockey is due to the fact they had no exposure to playing it. I played (at some level) all of the major sports, except hockey growing up. The first time I went to a hockey game I was a little sketchy on the rules and really wasn’t completely sure what was going on except for trying to get the puck in the goal.
The penalties left me a bit perplexed too. I remember thinking “A penalty of ‘icing’ — what the hell is that about? The playing surface — in case you hadn’t noticed Mr. Referee—is a big freakin’ sheet of ICE! They’re all knocking big chunks of the frozen stuff all over the place, why do you have to pick on that guy?”
Over time, however, I have picked up on most of the rules and so forth, but the other thing I realized the night I first went to watch a hockey game was that I didn’t need to understand the rules. In some ways, hockey is a synthesis of all the great games: the team model of basketball; a flow like soccer; the speed of … well … racing; the use of sticks to hit things like baseball (okay that one is a bit of a stretch); and the strategy and bone-crushing physicality of football. Oh, yeah, and there is the whole fistfight thing from boxing. The thing that makes it so exciting is the speed and the anticipation of the goal.
Most of all, it is just a hell of a lot of fun to watch. I really wish more Southerners would give it a look, it is a blast to watch in person.
So, all of you, go out and watch a hockey game next time you get the chance, whether it be the Hurricanes, the Predators, the Knoxville Ice Bears or whatever team is in your area. It’s a good time.
Just remember to bring a sweater…

Seriously, hockey is a pretty darn cool game. On top of that, most of the teams in the South know that they are a new thing to a lot of folks, and as a result have done everything they can to reach out to the community and show them what a great game hockey is. Here’s Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos explaining—GEICO style—what the Hurricanes did to get the community involved (well, sort of):

I love the outtakes reel at the end of that one
The game is just exciting, and I for one agree with what Mike Greenberg said on today’s edition of ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning this morning: while I may be a much bigger fan of other sports, the NHL playoffs are some of the most exciting sporting events you will ever see.
Yes, just like before, I do realize that all this hockey talk is a bit off-topic for a site focusing on the Vols and the SEC. Still, I figure there’s a little wiggle room in that whole “Life, the Universe…” part of the Gate’s byline (that’s those words at the top of the page, if you were wondering).
Besides, what else is there to write about at present…

Friday Already?!?
Well, here it is, Friday, and I’ve got very little to show for the week…
I have been tied up the latter half of the week, and have been unable to get anything of consequence posted. Even now, I am writing during a break in the action at a deposition. Sad though it may be, I think Orson over at EDSBS may have gotten things right in his “football reads” assessment of the path most lawyers take in finding their career—especially the whole lack of math skills part.
Anyway, since I’ve pretty much been absent lately, at a minimum, I wanted to pass a long a great video I stumbled upon. This is a pre-game pep-talk from the chaplain at Georgia Tech. Great line in there about “We gonna fight, till we cant fight no more, gonna lie down, bleed a while, gonna get up, fight some more!!!”

Monday Morning Video: UT Student Break Into Florida?

I came across this odd YouTube video last night at work – yes it was a terribly slow sports night. Apparently it’s a video of the inside of Florida’s football facilities, but the odd thing is that the user who put it up says it was a UT student who broke into the building. Even in the video’s description, it says Lane Kiffen is behind the whole operation – which I think is hilarious.
It’s obviously not real, and you may or may not have already seen it. Anyways, here it is…
And as you can to the right side of your screen, we’re already counting down to the kickoff of the ‘09 season against Western Kentucky. I’m excited about the spring game this upcoming Saturday, even if I can only go for like an hour due to work obligations. It will finally be great to see some football before we enter into the slowest and longest part of the sports year (my baseball interest level has been on the decline the past couple of years), and it’s going to be nice to have a football break right in the middle of two of the busiest school weeks of the spring…
To be honest, the one thing I’m most interested in seeing is the turnout for the game, to see if the presumed change from the incredibly sad apathy level of the past season to an excited fanbase fully supporting their new guy’s building process (yes, it’s a process) is really true. Hopefully it’s going to be a beautiful spring afternoon and a good time to come and watch the “new beginning” of sorts for Tennessee football.
Eric Berry: If You Can’t See Him, “You’re Blind”
Given the fact that I have continued to be a heavy-hitting slacker (if you’re going to do something, do it well), here’s a little more You Tubification of Eric Berry set to the sounds of Korn. This video montage, again, comes courtesy of VolzRChamps and BlazerChronicles.com.

The Blazer Chronicles: “Eric Berry vs. Tim Tebow”
Keeping in the swing of things earlier this week — and offering up a little more voice-over action — here is another edition of the Blazer Chronicles, this time presenting the battle of Eric Berry vs. Tim Tebow. As always, this comes courtesy of VolzRChamps and BlazerChronicles.com.

The Blazer Chronicles: A “Quotetastic” Look at the SEC
Well, after failing to get my Oklahoma State preview up in time for the game, and given the quick end to the BasketVols‘ run in the NCAA Tournament, I really haven’t had a lot to offer these past few days. Of course, when you set the bar very low—which has always been the policy of Gate 21—it takes extra effort to fail in grand style. I guess I am running behind in my running behind…
In the meantime, here’s a little something that is worth giving a look. I’m a bit behind in getting this up, but this is pretty funny if you ask me (which I realize you didn’t).
Here is a pretty hilarious look at the various coaches of the SEC in a way that I don’t think I have ever seen before. As always, this comes courtesy of VolzRChamps and BlazerChronicles.com, with a Tennessee All-Sports Update.

BREAKING NEWS: Bryce Brown Reported to Sign with Tennessee
According to Brian Butler’s Potential Players.com, high school standout Bryce Brown has just signed with Tennessee.

Boldly going completely off topic…

I realize that I have been doing a really lousy job of keeping up with things lately, and that I have done a less than stellar job at posting anything of substance. Sorry about that. Be that as it may, this post is really not going to change that since it is completely off-topic and irrelevant to a sports blog. Still, if you are a geek like me, this video is still pretty cool.
This is the trailer for the new pre-quel coming out this May entitled, simply enough, Star Trek. The link will also take you to the Apple Movie Trailer site where you can actually watch it in 1080p HD.

Judging from the trailer, it doesn’t look like you have to be a fan of the old Star Trek to enjoy this one.
Anyway, I just felt like posting this, so I did.
If you don’t like it, then sue me (not like I am not fully prepared to deal with that possibility)…
