SEC Basketball Power Poll Ballot: Week 8
Check out the Full Poll Results at Garnet and Black Attack!
Week 8
Through 26 February 2009
Well, I’m running behind as usual, but moving purposefully. The teams of the SEC (with the exception of LSU, Georgia, and Arkansas who have pretty much landed where they will stay) are engaged in a slugfest to determine who gets the leftovers. Bearing this in mind here’s my ballot for this week’s SEC Basketball Power Poll. As always, you can see the final poll results which will be posted over at Garnet and Black Attack Thursday-ish.
Anyway, here’s my ballot for this first week in the SEC Basketball Power Poll, along with a feeble attempt at explaining why I’m such a moron.

The LSU Tigers are the class of the SEC by far — there is no one even close. Whether they can make a tournament run remains to be seen. |
2. |
The South Carolina Gamecocks grab second by default — there is no one else really deserving, and I’m not even convinced that they are either. |
3. |
The loss to LSU is hardly a black eye considering the Tigers’ strength — and the fact the Florida Gators already had two shiners to begin with. |
4. (t) |
Two losses this week for the Kentucky Wildcats — one to Vandy who then lost to Georgia. Time to break out the bourbon — it’s gonna be a bumpy March. |
4. (t) |
Up, Down! Up, Down! No this isn’t a verbal description of an X-rated movie for the visually impaired, it’s just a really inconsistent season for the the Tennessee Volunteers. |
6. |
The Auburn Tigers are sort of hard to describe: a little sweetness and a lot of suck. Oh, and some how in 2nd in the West. |
7. |
Losing to Tennessee wasn’t all that bad, but Alabama? The Mississippi State Bulldogs can do better than that. |
8. |
The Ole Miss Rebels look good some nights and really bad on others. I wonder how that performance correlates to whether Andy Kennedy takes a taxi to the arena? |
9. |
After losing four in a row, the Alabama Crimson Tide managed to win back to back games this week, but likely have 3 losses ahead. |
10. |
First the Vanderbilt Commodores beat Kentucky — nice. Then they lose to Florida – alright, not unexpected. But losing to Georgia? (vomit noises) |
11. |
Who knew? The Georgia Bulldogs have managed two good wins lately: Florida and Vandy. Can the Dawgs grab a third in the SEC? Yeah, I’m waiting on that one too. |
12. |
I thought Georgia would win the “Worst of the Best” award but the Arkansas Razorbacks have never let up in their battle to the bottom. It takes dedication to fight your way to failure. |
So there you have it, my thoughts on the state of SEC Basketball for this week.

2009 SEC Basketball Power Poll Ballot: Week 3
Check out the Full Poll Results at Garnet and Black Attack!
Week 3
Through 21 January 2009
Well, I’m beginning to conclude that this may, in fact, be a down year for the SEC. With the exception of Kentucky, none of the teams seem to be able to find any consistency at all. Bearing that in mind, here’s my attempt to read the tea-leaves for this week—in the form of my ballot for the SEC Basketball Power Poll. As always, you can see the final poll results which will be posted over at Garnet and Black Attack Thursday-ish.

It was a strong week for the Kentucky Wildcats with wins over the Vols, Dawgs, and War Tig-les. Right now, they look like the cream of the crop in the SEC. |
2. |
— |
After getting hammered by the Cats last week, the Tennessee Volunteers bounced back with wins against the Cocks and the Dores. If they can continue to play defense, this team could gel into something impressive. Memphis, however, will test them. |
3. |
The LSU Tigers are on a bit of a roll, winning 3 in a row and their 17th at home. Next up is Xavier, which they should win, followed by the Vols in Knoxville which will be much tougher. |
4. |
Well, the Florida Gators are obviously beatable, as South Carolina made clear. While Nick Calathes is good, hitting your free throws to win is better. |
5. |
The South Carolina Gamecocks pulled off an unlikely win against the Gators on Tuesday. At 13-4 / 2-2, are they for real? |
6. |
The Mississippi State Bulldogs may be the dark horse of the SEC West. Though they lost to LSU, the Bulldogs have the potential to be strong in March. Their next two games, against hapless Georgia and Ole Miss, make that even more likely. |
7. |
Well, Alabama Crimson Tide Coach Mark Gottfried is in the news again courtesy of Kevin Steele, but not necessarily the way he hoped. I’m thinking Kentucky is a loss, but what do I know? |
8. |
The Vanderbilt Commodores are a bit of an unknown, but looked very weak against the Vols. In fact, they looked dreadful. Facing Florida this week is not likely to improve things. This could be a long season in Nashville. |
9. |
After coming out with wins against top 10 teams, the Arkansas Razorbacks have gone stone cold. They have a chance, however, against Auburn and perpetually listless Alabama. I suggest they take it before the wheels come off completely. |
10. |
— |
Auburn has two winnable games coming up. Arkansas can be tough if they choose, but lately they haven’t so there’s a chance. Texas-Pan American, on the other hand, has been mistaken as an airline. |
11. |
— |
The Ole Miss Rebels are looking at three tough games in a row: at South Carolina, Kentucky in Oxford, and then a contest at Miss St. Furthermore, Coach Andy Kennedy just isn’t feeling the vibe the way he used to. If I were a betting man … I think I just get drunk and shoot myself. |
12. |
— |
The Georgia Bulldogs have lost 4 in a row. With games at Florida and Alabama this week, it’s likely to soon be 6. Maybe Dennis Felton should have stayed in Washington after the inauguration. |
So there you have it, my thoughts on the state of SEC Basketball for this week.

Final 2008 Season Poll
Well, as we try to dig out of the snow that has covered everything in my neck of the woods, I am trying to get caught back up. Yes, I admit it I’ve been lazy these past few days and haven’t posted a darn thing.
Back in the saddle, here we go…
Yes sports fans, the 2008 college football season is in the books. We here at Gate 21, along with fellow fans of the other SEC teams hated to see it go so much that we drug out our final voting for as long as we could. Try as we might, however, football season is over. Thus, here is my last ballot in the SEC Power Poll for the 2008 season, along with an feeble attempt at explaining why I’m such a moron.

No matter how much I dislike them or how hard I might try, the Florida Gators are the National Champions, and thus are deserving of the No. 1 spot in the final poll, no questions asked. Sucks, don’t it? |
2. |
Pre-season, I’d have said you were crazy if you told me that the Ole Miss Rebels would be my No. 2 team at season’s end, but they earned it. With their strong finishing victory against Texas Tech, their 9-4 overall record, their amazing improvement over last year, and their having been the only team to beat Florida they earned it. Nice job by the Right-Reverend Nutt. |
3. |
— |
No change for the Georgia Bulldogs. Sure, they beat Michigan State, but it wasn’t pretty and they were supposed to win. A solid season, but a disappointing one nonetheless. On another note, I’m sure gonna miss Larry Munson, though… |
4. |
Well, the Alabama Crimson Tide took notched two lop-sided losses since the last regular season ballot. The Florida loss was (in my mind) expected. The Utah blow-out was not. Thus, the Tide falls a few spots for a lapse in focus. Still, a nice season for a team full of freshmen and sophomores. |
5. |
The Vanderbilt Commodores were supposed to be average this season. They were supposed to putz along, business as usual. They were supposed to lose to Boston College. So much for “supposed tos.” Here’s to Vandy, to showing everyone they still know how to Show their Gold! |
6. (tie) |
— |
The Kentucky Wildcats won their bowl game against East Carolina — earning them their first win against a team with a winning record. That’s hardly impressive, and they hang on to their spot by the narrowest of margins. |
6. (tie) |
Most folks thought that Georgia Tech would give the LSU Tigers fits. In the end, the only fits were the withdrawal pains of the Tiger faithful when they quit selling beer at the Georgia Dome at the start of the 4th quarter. Nice finish to a rollercoaster season. |
8. |
The South Carolina Gamecocks hoped to end their late-season slide against Iowa. Nice idea, but one which simply failed to come together. Still, considering they started with 2 conference losses, not all that bad. Hey, at least they got to go to a bowl. |
9. |
— |
I had half a mind to give the Tennessee Volunteers a bump up due to all the excitement surrounding new coach Lane Kiffin, but I couldn’t in good conscience do that. Next year, however, should be fun in Knox-vegas. |
10. |
— |
“There’s nothing to see here, please disperse. The cow-bell clanging you hear is all a figment of your imagination.” This was a tough one for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and I hated to see Sly Croom—my pre-season coach of the year—go, but he did about as well as he could given the situation he inherited. |
11. |
The Arkansas Razorbacks showed some real improvement during the middle of the season, but faded at the end. Still, Bobby Petrino didn’t quit mid-season to go coach the German National Swimming team, so there’s that, too. |
12. |
Yeah, I dropped the Auburn Tigers a spot. Any fan base who attacks their new coach before he even coaches a game earns that due to the divisive nature of their actions. Of course, I understand they blame the AD. Still, a tough situation for new head coach Gene Chizik. |
Well, there you have it. My final ballot for 2008. Hopefully, the powers that be will ask me back for another round in the fall. Either way, it has been fun indeed. Do not, however, be dismayed—I’ll be posting my SEC Basketball Power Poll ballot in the next day or so.

Jodie Meeks. ‘Nuff said. |
2. |

I have real problems ranking the Tennessee Volunteers this high considering how they have been struggling. A loss against South Carolina could point to even more serious problems. After making more talented guards across the country look all-world, all the Vols can say is “Thank you sir, may I please have another.“ |
3. |
– |
The Florida Gators grabbed a really ugly win over Auburn — really ugly. But an ugly win is better than a stellar loss. |
4. |
The LSU Tigers win over the Gamecocks was impressive, and enough to get them a bump this week. |
5. |
After starting off gangbusters, the Arkansas Razorbacks faded hard this week losing to both Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The lesson we have learned? Stay away from Mississippi… |
6. |
The South Carolina Gamecocks managed a decent win against Auburn followed by an equally impressive loss to LSU. Thus the jury is still out. |
7. |
– |
The Vanderbilt Commodores managed to pound on the Dawgs this week which is nice for them. Unfortunately, Georgia is, as we we say in the business, “lousy.” |
8. |
This week the Alabama Crimson Tide made LSU look bad, Mississippi State look good and Mark Gottfried look like he always does: average. |
9. |
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are looking like they could be a sleeper. A win against Vandy or LSU this week would make them look stronger. A win against both and they probably get the cow bells out again. |
10. |
The Auburn Tigers dropped two this week, even appearing to try to lose to the Gators. Looks like the slide is on, Down on the Plains. Of course, they didn’t give up 54 points to a single player either … so there’s that. |
11. |
The Ole Miss Rebels beat an Arkansas team that I probably had overrated and lost to a Florida team that I probably had underrated. Thus, so far they are pretty much doing what they are supposed to do. |
12. |
The Georgia Bulldogs made Vandy look good and Tennessee look overconfident. Are the Dawgs going to be the team that everyone beats immediately before losing? |
So there you have it, my thoughts on the state of SEC Basketball for this week.

2009 SEC Basketball Power Poll Ballot: Week 1
Check out the Full Poll Results at Garnet and Black Attack!
Week 1
Through 6 January 2009
Well, given the fact that the collective SEC Blogging brain trust simply couldn’t give up on a good thing, this week Gate 21 along with a host of real blogs (ones that actually know what they are talking about) proudly debuts the first SEC Basketball Power Poll, ranking the relative “power” (hence the name … pretty cool, huh?) of the basketball squads for each of the SEC-member schools on a weekly basis throughout conference play. In the future, these ballots will be submitted by the various members at the first of the week with the results being posted over at Garnet and Black Attack Thursday-ish. Since this week is the first week of the 2009 Poll, however, well … we’re running behind.
Anyway, here’s my ballot for this first week in the SEC Basketball Power Poll, along with a feeble attempt at explaining why I’m such a moron.

The Tennessee Volunteers have managed a couple of nice wins so far, most notably against Georgetown, and a close loss to Gonzaga (whom they play again tonight). The Vols have played the toughest schedule of the SEC teams thus far, and have the experience to go with it. On the other hand, they have also managed to completely stink it up a bit with inconsistent guard play, the inability to hit the 3-Point shot, and a general lack of direction and identity. That said, they are still probably the best team in the SEC…for now. |
2. |
n/a |
The Arkansas Razorbacks have been a real surprise thus far this season. After defeating the Texas Longhorns 67–61—their second win over a top-10 opponent this year—the Hogs look to be for real. As a team, Arkansas looks to be a force to be reckoned with in the SEC West, second only to the litany of expletives emanating from Coach John Pelphrey’s mouth. |
3. |
n/a |
The Florida Gators are a solid team whose biggest win to date came against the NC State Wolfpack. That’s all well and good except that the Wolfpack are, well, not very good. Still a solid start for the Gators. |
4. |
n/a |
The South Carolina Gamecocks are 11-2 thus far, despite a less than impressive schedule. Their only real test to date ended in a loss to the Clemson Tigers, but they clearly have the ability to win, the question remains as to whether they will actually do that down the stretch. |
5. |
n/a |
The Kentucky Wildcats came out in full force suck losing to both VMI and the Tarheads in their first two games of the season. From there, however they have improved. Had they beaten their kissing cousins, the Louisville Cardinals, they’d have been higher this week. Still, it’s probably a little early to start screaming to “Fire Billy.” |
6. |
n/a |
The LSU Tigers really haven’t played anyone yet this season, and thus are sort of an unknown. Their 12-2 record, however, gives them the boost into the top-half of the conference. We’ll see if they can hold on to it once they start conference play this weekend against the Tide. |
7. |
n/a |
Like LSU, the Vanderbilt Commodores have yet to really show whether they are good or not. At 11-3, they appear to have some talent, but a win at Kentucky on Saturday will definitely improve their ranking. |
8. |
n/a |
The Auburn Tigers lost 4 of their first 7 games, but have come on since the start of December, picking up 7 straight wins including a win against the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville. Still, opening up with losses to Mercer, Dayton, and Northern Iowa hardly inspires confidence. |
9. |
n/a |
Mark Gottfried has been coaching the Alabama Crimson Tide for 11 seasons now, but they rarely seem to get much better or much worse. At 10-4, it looks like the Tide will likely reside in the middle of the SEC once again. Will Gottfried make it to 12 seasons? |
10. |
n/a |
Well, it isn’t much, but the Mississippi State Bulldogs’ Basketball team is a little better than the football team fielded in Starkville this year. Still, at 10-5, they have managed a few decent wins recently, most notably against Houston and Western Kentucky. |
11. |
n/a |
The Georgia Bulldogs managed the seemingly impossible in the SEC Tournament last year, but they appear to have returned to their ways of old this year, losing every game played thus far against a quality opponent. |
12. |
n/a |
At 9-5, the Ole Miss Rebels are deceptive in that they appear to be a decent team. Don’t be fooled, there may be great suckification ahead in Oxford if they can’t manage to play an entire game to the end—just like they didn’t against Southern Miss. |
So there you have it, my pre-SEC conference Power Poll rankings which are worth almost nothing. In a few weeks we should have a much clearer picture of who is for real and who is not. For now, however, we are really left to little more than educated guessing.
The Rest of the Power Poll

SEC Power Poll: All-SEC Safeties

SEC Power Poll
All-SEC Selections: Safeties
Well, due to a complete lack of judgment on the part of the SEC Power Poll brain-trust, Gate 21 has been selected to announce the Power Poll All-SEC Team selections at safety. The rest of the defensive positions are being announced today across the blogosphere as well. Be sure to check them out:
- The Red Solo Cup: Defensive Line
- Garnet and Black Attack: Linebackers
- Save the Shield: Cornerbacks
And in case you didn’t get a chance to catch the offensive selections, they are already available at Team Speed Kills.
The envelope, please…
The 2008 Power Poll All-SEC Selections at Safety are: Eric Berry (Tennessee) and Rashad Johnson (Alabama). The reasons behind these should be obvious, but in case they aren’t here’s why these two fine athletes are in a class of their own:
Eric Berry • 14
Tennessee Volunteers
5’11” • 195 • Sophomore • Safety
What can you really say about Eric Berry that hasn’t already been said?
This deep-ball predator is the sound of pain to backs and receivers in the open field, and a quarterback’s worst nightmare. This defensive terror has amassed nearly every accolade possible in his two seasons at Tennessee. He has broken almost every record for interceptions, some of which had stood for a very long time. Berry holds records for most interceptions at UT in a single season (which previously stood for 37 years), most career interceptions at UT (39 years), SEC record for most interceptions in a season (52 years) and SEC most career interceptions (59 years). He was named freshman defensive player of the year in 2007, as well as Freshman All-American. As of the end of the 2008 season, he is 14 yards shy of breaking the NCAA all-time record for career interception return yardage of 501 yards (which has stood since 1989-91). Most recently, he also garnered unanimous All-American honors. On top of all of this he can now add one more prize to his trophy case:
Unanimous Selection: 2008 SEC Power Poll All-SEC Team
Oh, and, yes, he is just a sophomore…
Thus, it is understandable why some are already viewing Berry as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate for 2009 and 2010. In my Sports Blog Heisman Ballot, I quoted an article which I believe describes Berry’s style of play about as well as any I’ve ever read:
The Vols’ athletic outlier plays the game like it’s on a sheet of ice and he’s the only one that brought skates. … Berry is the flower that’s sprouted in a compost heap of a year.
As a result, of Berry’s punishing style of play, the Vols’ defense finished 4th in the country in total defense, despite having a less than stellar record.
Even more impressive, however, is Berry’s never quit attitude on the field (even when down by 20-plus points) and his ability to dish out some mammoth hits. But don’t take my word for it just give these a look (or ask Knowshon Moreno)…

I can only imagine what the SEC will see from Berry next season. Either way, I’d be scared.

Rashad Johnson • 49
Alabama Crimson Tide
6’0” • 186 • Senior • Safety
Rashad Johnson started out as a walk on in Tuscaloosa, played under 2 different coaches, and singlehandedly willed himself into becoming one of the top safeties in the country. This Alabama native ended with 5 interceptions on the season including the game-winning grab against the LSU Tigers in overtime. His stats pretty much speak for themselves, and paint a picture of a young man in a hurry … to get to the ball that is.
Johnson capped off his senior season by being named 1st team All-American by the AFCA and 2nd team by the Walter Camp, Sporting News, and Associated Press voters as a safety. This “converted” running back can now add SEC Power Poll All-SEC to his resume as well.
Now, Johnson has the pleasure of looking forward to an NFL career, as numerous teams have shown an interest. As one of the senior leaders for Alabama this season, he will be sorely missed in 2009. For now, however, he’s one of the Pride of the Tide.
Here’s a few highlights from Johnson’s senior campaign:

SEC Power Poll All-SEC Team
Well, my good friends over at Garnet and Black Attack—who bring you the SEC Power Poll—have decided that the Power Poll voters have just as much right to name an All-SEC team as we do to rank the SEC teams on a weekly basis (that would be none, but we do it anyway). Thus, soon the first ever SEC Power Poll All-SEC team will be released for all to admire.
Either way, here’s my ballot for the SEC Power Poll All-SEC Team. Feel free to enlighten me if you think I have missed someone or been led astray…

Well, there were only four games in the SEC this weekend, thus, I have very little to say about some of the teams that took the week off. Be that as it may, here’s my ballot for this week in the SEC Power Poll, along with a feeble attempt at explaining why I’m such a moron.

The Alabama Crimson Tide did not play and spent the weekend quilting. I really doubt, however, that this minor lapse in focus will matter considering Auburn is likely toast this weekend anyway. |
2. |
C’mon guys, the Citadel?! Have a heart… The Florida Gators face the Florida State Seminoles this weekend before getting ready for the Tide in the SEC Championship Game. I bet there is nothing in the world that Bobby Bowden would like more than to spoil the Gators run. Too bad it isn’t going to happen. |
3. |
The Georgia Bulldogs did not play this week, but face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets this weekend. A win against the Ramblin’ Wreck all but makes the Dawgs a lock for the Florida-House-Capital-USA-Tangerine-Comp-One-Citrus Bowl, or what ever the hell they are calling it these days. |
4. |
The Ole Miss Rebels have come out of nowhere to beat two Top 25 teams, and nearly beating a third. As a result, they have rocketed toward the top of my ballot. Now, if they can just win the Egg Bowl, they’ll have put together an 8-win season, which is impressive considering how lousy they were last year. I bet Arkansas is wishing they still had their “Nutt” now… |
5. |
The South Carolina Gamecocks did not play, but this week will face kissing-cousin the Clemson Tigers. The Cocks need a win to really call this a good season. Clemson needs a win to maintain respectability. My money is on the Ole Ball Coach… |
6. |
The Kentucky Wildcats had the week off, and now look to face the Vols in Knoxville. The Cats desperately need a win to improve their bowl hopes. Can the Wildcats break the streak this weekend? Good Lord, I hope not! |
7. |
I really hated to see the Vanderbilt Commodores lose, but then again I’d have hated to see the Vols lose more. Either way, this has been a successful season for the Dores, and at least there’s a chance a bowl (which more than my Vols can say). |
8. |
Wow, the LSU Tigers‘ season has gone straight into the toilet. I suppose a repeat championship is out of the question. |
9. |
Nice win for the Tennessee Volunteers against the Dores, in a season where every win is a “nice win.” Can the Big Orange send the Great Punkin out with a win? He surely deserves that small courtesy. |
10. |
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! Yes, Virginia, there is a CowBell Claus, and after the bell banging Mississippi State Bulldogs got his gift and managed to barely squeak past Arkansas 31-28 this past week, his job is done and he’s decided to go get drunk until next year. Their Egg Bowl battle this week with the Rebels, however, doesn’t look as promising. |
11. |
Sheesh! Pre-season, I had the Auburn Tigers winning the West. That’s the last time I base make picks based on which coach has the strongest hair gel. The Iron Bowl this weekend could get really ugly. |
12. |
So much for slowly improving… I guess the Arkansas Razorbacks have probably met the expectations most had for them this season—namely floundering about. |
The Rest of the Power Poll

Week 9
Well, in case you hadn’t noticed, I never got around to posting my ballot for the SEC Power Poll last week (which I did cast)due to the fact I was in the midst of the trial from hell. At present, and much to my dismay, I am still in trial, but figure I can only blame the legal system for so much of my slack. Thus, here’s my ballot for the week in the SEC Power Poll, but since I forgot to save my ballot for last week, I cannot remember what position everyone was in last week, thus all of the changes are omitted. Sorry about that — feel free to sue me, I’m more than up to it.
Here it is, my darlins:

The Alabama Crimson Tide more than made the Vols Rah-spect their author-itah by trouncing the Big Orange in Knoxville. Bama looks to be the team to be down the stretch. |
2. |
I was impressed with the Georgia Bulldogs victory over LSU and the “The Hat.” As I figured from the outset, the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will determine the East. My money is on the Dawgs. |
3. |
So much for Urban Meyer not running up the score inside the conference. Of course with the way UK played the Florida Gators would have had to take a knee on 1st down to avoid scoring. Georgia won’t be so easy. |
4. |
That one smarted. The LSU Tigers took it in the teeth courtesy of the Bulldogs this week. They are likely out of the BCS race, but are still likely to have a chance to pound on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a bowl game, so there’s that. |
5. |
South Carolina Gamecocks coach Steve “the Ole Ball Coach” Spurrier has been waiting all year for this week — another chance to face his old foe, the Great Punkin. Enjoy it while you can, Steve, given the news coming out of Knoxville, it’ll likely be your last chance. |
6. |
Given their special teams play this past week, I think it would probably be wise for the Kentucky Wildcats to simply start going for it on 4th Down every time. It might also be wise to drink for several days in advance to dull the pain. Still, they’re 5-3, and that counts for something. |
7. |
Things looks so much different for the Vanderbilt Commodores than they did just a few weeks ago. Bowl eligibility is now looking shaky — still it’s just one win away. It’s still possible … right? |
8. |
The Very Reverend Houston Nutt has the Ole Miss Rebels at 4-4. A win against Auburn this weekend will put them in good shape to finish with a winning season. A nice improvement over last year. |
9. |
The Mississippi State Bulldogs were understandably upset after losing to the imploding Vols, and took it out on another team from Tennessee. The Cowbell Clan might just be able to repeat it this week versus the Wildcats. |
10. |
I suppose the Auburn Tigers spent to much dreaming of John Denver and his “Country Roads” to notice that they had a game to play against the Mountaineers. I think it’s fair to say that the wheels have come off. |
11. |
As for the Tennessee Volunteers, umm … errr … you know … damn! No comment… |
12. |
Well, at least the Arkansas Razorbacks kept it respectable against the Rebels. Though still lousy, the Hogs continue to improve under “Bobby P” who, after 8 games, now has enough time in at UA to qualify for retirement under his contract. |
I figure this one is fairly self explanatory.
The Rest of the Power Poll

Well, considering that I have the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 1 in my BlogPoll Ballot, it stands to reason that they will also be No. 1 in my Power Poll Ballot. Well, it makes sense to me… |
2. |
The Florida Gators absolutely dismantled the Bayou Bengals this past weekend, in precisely the way I did not predict. Shows what I know. That was not the same Florida team that beat Tennessee — The Gators look tough again. |
3. |
Well, the Georgia Bulldogs handled the Vols without much difficulty this weekend — not that doing that is really something special at present. The Dawgs looked tough, but very sloppy. If they could just maintain their focus, they could be terrors. |
4. |
The Vanderbilt Commodores went out this past weekend and laid an egg. They are really going to wish they had taken care of business versus the Cowbell Clan — wins will not come easily from this point forward. Still, they are tied for the lead in the East. |
5. |
The LSU Tigers pretty much get this spot by default, since there is a huge drop-off after No. 5. After losing so convincingly this weekend versus the Gators, I wonder: is this all part of some bizarre plan on the part of “The Hat?” Well, at least the Golden Band from Tigerland won the Indiana Jones contest… |
6. |
The South Carolina Gamecocks beat Kentucky on Saturday. Then arch-rival Clemson canned their coach on Monday. To top it off, it’s after 1:00am on Tuesday morning, and no one on scholarship has gotten arrested yet. Yep, it’s a pretty good week to be in Columbia. Of course next week looks like back to “suck” as those other Tigers come to town. |
7. |
The Kentucky Wildcats have no excuse for losing to the Gamecocks. At least now they get to make up for it by pounding on Arkansas. |
8. |
I had the Auburn Tigers as my pick to win the West. The Tigers’ loss to Arkansas the week after dropping a game to Vandy makes me think that I could, just possibly, be wrong. Apparently, Auburn has yet to figure out that you have to score points to win games. |
9. |
– |
The Ole Miss Rebels have been playing well but have struggled to find consistency. This week, however, I think they will find it — by losing to Alabama. Still, the Rebs are far better than last year. |
10. |
How the Mississippi State Bulldogs managed to beat Vanderbilt is beyond me. Still, a nice win for Coach Sly. Given the way things have been going, they have a decent shot at picking up another in Knoxville this week. A decade ago, the Bulldogs played the Vols for the SEC Championship — how things have changed. |
11. |
After the Arkansas Razorbacks beat Auburn this past weekend, Bobby Petrino has decided to leave while on top, and will be taking the Clemson job. Considering they will be changing the name of the state to “South Petrinolina” and he will be referred to as “Lord and Emperor,” do you blame him? |
12. |
Oh my! I never thought I would see the day. Despite strong improvement at Quarterback, the Tennessee Volunteers still fell short against the Dawgs. At most I see the Big Orange winning 1, maybe 2, conference games and finishing with (at best) a 5-7 record. Lose to Miss. State this weekend, and it looks more like 3-9. |
