We interrupt this silence to bring you nothing in particular…
Just in case you thought I was dead or moved to Georgia, I figured I’d go ahead and let everyone know that I won’t be posting this week—I’m on vacation and won’t be back around until the first of next week. Thus, though I know it breaks your heart, you’ll have to wait a few days before there is anymore nonsensical drivel riveting and hard-hitting analysis here at the Gate.
All I can say is that this brief reprieve is long overdue. Time to slow down a bit, sit and watch the sunset, maybe even grab a few rays.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch… (A few items of interest)
Well, there hasn’t been much going on in Big Orange Country of late, thus I have been painfully slow at posting…
There have been a few items of interest, mainly Robert Ayres being drafted at No. 18 by the Denver Broncos, along with Ramon Foster, Josh Briscoe, Lucas Taylor, Arian Foster, Britton Colquitt, and DeAngelo Willingham who were all picked up in free agency. A dutiful blogger would have something insightful to say about all of this, but I have not been particularly dutiful of late and Hooper has already said pretty much everything worth saying over at RockyTopTalk. Thus, I’ll just ride his coattails for the moment (sigh…).
On another front, apparently the powers that be in World soccer have decided that Neyland Stadium is worthy of hosting World Cup (Soccer) competition, and everyone’s favorite stadium has made the cut in the most recent round of machinations pertaining to site selection for the United States’ bid to host the 2018 / 2022 World Cup. While I am hardly the world’s biggest soccer fan (despite spending an inordinate amount of time watching 9-year-olds compete in it), it was nice to note that Neyland Stadium qualified, while Bryant-Denny Stadium (Alabama Crimson Tide), Tiger Stadium (LSU Tigers), Jordan-Hare Stadium (Auburn Tigers), and Beaver Stadium (Penn State Nittany Lions), among others did not. I guess that new jumbotron was just too good a thing to turn down.
Heh…
Finally, as a resident of the RDU area of North Carolina, my “other” team is fighting for a chance to advance toward claiming Lord Stanley’s Cup. Yes, that is hockey for those of you who do not realize it. No, I wasn’t born in Canada. Yes, I grew up in the South. Yes, you should really consider giving the NHL a try—hockey is pretty cool (especially when there is no football). For both of you out there who care, you can read all there is to be known about my othe team, the Carolina Hurricanes, over at Canes Country, which is part of the SBN family of blogs, (i.e. a lot better than this joint).
In the meantime, I will continue to work diligently to find ways to waste time on meaningless things and thus avoid wasting time writing meaningless articles…

Back from wherever it is that I have been, including Home Depot
No, I didn’t quit writing, join the circus, get attacked by Somali Pirates, or decide to take up ad hoc piloting of random airplanes falling pilotless from the sky. I just decided that it was time for a few days off. This was due to a number of things. First there was the fact that—after the conclusion of the Final Four—there wasn’t much to talk about last week. Secondly, I have been working on trying to get a few things done which, hopefully, will improve a few things here at the Gate in anticipation of football season (and I do really hope that this is the case). Furthermore, my non-blogging life has required that I do things other than fixate upon football season which, according to the tell-tale little widget over on the right sidebar (that’s this way
for those of you who are directionally challenged), is still more than 140 days off. Finally, there were three big points which put me in bit of a funk, one which I decided to wallow in for a day or so, those points are as follows:
Pretty much sums up my luck...
- Florida Gators, National Champions;
- North Carolina Tarheels, National Champions; and
- Connecticut Huskies, National Champions.
I guess 2008-09 just wasn’t meant to be my year. So it goes…
Anyway, all of that said, here I am back again with a number of stream of consciousness observations that I wanted to chase down, and now seems as good a time as any…
Who knew that Home Depot was a hotbed of College Football Conflict…
I live in Eastern North Carolina, I am within 20 miles of the University of North Carolina (a/k/a “Tarhead U”), Duke University, and NC State University. I am anywhere but in the heart of SEC country and quite a distance from anything resembling real football. The closest team of consequence would probably be the Carolina Panthers, which is not exactly the same thing. For this reason, I was a bit surprised this weekend at a brief exchange I had in the parking lot of my local purveyor of all things home improvement related: Home Depot.
My goal was simple: collect 18 bags of mulch for the yard. My mind was focused on trying to figure out if there was a way to get out of spending the rest of the weekend playing with wood chips and was less than attuned to matters related to football. I had already dumped 12 bags of the stuff, and thus was less than cognizant of my “yard hat” which has “Tennessee” emblazoned upon it in letters which could be read from across the room … a large room.
Thus, I was a bit taken aback when I stepped out of my truck to a firm and slightly louder than it should have been greeting from a man in a jeep with a huge-ish Gator head on the spare tire cover:
“BOOOOOOO!! Kiffin!”
Again, not fully in command of my football fightin’ instincts at the moment, the best response I could muster was a thumbs up in my heckler’s direction, paired with a wink, and a half-perplexed “How ‘bout ‘cha?!”
The point of this seemingly inane tale of my trip to the hardware store (ahem, “Home Improvement Warehouse”) is not meant to warn of the pitfalls attending minor maintenance tasks, to assail Home Depot’s loyalties (I know they are based out of Atlanta, but their colors are orange and white, after all), or to provide a convenient excuse for getting out of those “Honey-Do” lists. It’s far more subtle than that…
Lane Kiffin is in the Gators’ heads.
At least in my semi-unbalanced mind, my harmless little weekend run-in—paired with the profusion of “Tennessee” signs seen in the video posted by HSH—it seems that Kiffin’s little barbs have hit their mark far beyond the confines East Tennessee. Some of the Gator faithful agree. Of course, as the Hoopmaster General discovered, the sparring does come at a bit of price in the form of craziness from the less than sane and those with an axe to grind (or a deadline to meet). Still, as John Pennington pointed out the Blackjack General’s messages are not simply confined to sound bites and quips, but are rapidly approaching the point of real tangible substance.
With no disrespect to Coach Fulmer, I’m betting that in April 2008 my assailant says nothing at all.
I like it!
Moving Right Along … to the Orange & White Game
It’s Spring Football Time in Tennessee!
Yes, you can get a small football fix this weekend by attending the Orange & White Game, scheduled to start at 3:00 at Neyland Stadium. All sorts of information on the game is available over at UT Sports.com. Tickets are $5.00 and all proceeds will go to benefit UT’s Hodges Library. Besides, when else can you get to see the Vols play for $5.00?
For those of you planning on attending the game, I would encourage you to consider meeting up with the guys from Rocky Top Talk who will be meeting in front of the hallowed ground of the Real Gate 21 on Saturday, for more information check out the faux-schedule for the meet-up. Sorry to disappoint everyone, but Joel, Hooper, and Will will not be signing autographs, but many of the 2009 Vols will be, so don’t get too upset.
On a more substantive note, the Spring Outlook / Team Breakdown is now available for download as well
. It is full of stats and perspectives on the squad coming into the Orange & White game.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, but hope to find somewhere to catch the game on the web. The Orange & White Game is sponsored by Dish Network, however, apparently it will not be televised anywhere, including Dish Network.
Either way, this is the best chance for Orange Nation to get a glimpse of the new look Vols…
Finally, an amazing story from the non-sports world worth giving a look…
“Are you using the autopilot, or are you flying the airplane?”
• Southwest Florida Int’l Air Traffic Control
“Me and the Good Lord’s Hands are flying this one…”
• Airplane Passenger, Doug White
Those are not words you like to hear from a pilot trying to guide a plane in for landing, but that is what airplane passenger Doug White had to say during his brush with fate earlier this week. If you haven’t heard about this story, you really should check out the article posted at CNN.com. White, along with his family were flying home to Louisiana on a twin engine plane when the pilot unexpectedly died shortly after taking off from Fort Meyers, Florida. There was no co-pilot on board. As a result, White—who had flying experience, but only in single engine planes—was forced to land the plane on his own.
Fortunately, with the assistance of Air Traffic controllers, White managed to land the plane safely.
For me, the audio recording of White’s conversation with the tower are particularly compelling. The FAA released the audio recording earlier today. It is a little on the long side and has several periods of extended silence (5-10 seconds), but giving it a listen will remind you just how great it is to be alive. From the tension and relief in White’s voice near the end of the recording, I am pretty sure that he is glad. Seriously, if you have a few minutes give the full recording a listen.

Shoutin’ Out: Lawvol speads a little love…

Seeing as I am currently loaded up with more projects than I can keep up with (more on that in the near future), I thought now would be as good a time as any to send out a few “messages of love” to those across the web who are deserving.
Thus, I bring you a few points of interest worth exploring (along with a few links sandwiched in between):
First of all, there are a few new additions to the Vol-logosphere which require a quick mention:
Vol Junkies
Vol Junkies has been around for a while now, and has a great looking site which does a fine job commenting on the exact same thing the rest of us orange-wearing bloggers do, except—unlike yours truly—the man in charge over there actually has some idea of what he is about. Furthermore, half of the site appears to be on fire (just go visit, you’ll see what I mean) Be it football, basketball, or politics, if it’s orange, VJ has it. You can check it all out at: http://VolJunkies.com
Bleeding Orange
Bleeding Orange is another new Vol-log led by the eponymous Tennessy Vol who speaks from within the confines of the University of Tennessee (yeah, he’s a student). He has only been around a short while, but has nonetheless put together some really good stuff which is worth giving a look, take for instance his recent breakdown on the Vols recruiting class. You can check it all out at: http://bleedingorange.wordpress.com.
Peace Out, 2008

A List of Reminiscing…
Well, it’s New Year’s Eve, the final day of 2008. Yes, I know, I’m asking “Already?!?” just you like may be doing. It seems like last month I was standing in Times Square in NYC for nine hours (without any food, drinks, or bathroom breaks) with five of my friends ringing in 2008. But here it is, the start of another year is less than 24 hours away.
Now hopefully you have yet to bail on me because of that terribly mushy opening, and if you have I thank you. I’ll get to my little list of what I’ll most remember from the past year in sports in a minute, but first I need to say that I began this whole blogging thing back in June, when the looming monster of summer school was at my doorstep. When I started, I didn’t really know what I was doing, and I wasn’t sure how long I’d be blogging or any of that. I really enjoyed it at first, mostly the posts following the NBA Finals games and my amateur, yet rather extensive, coverage of the Rocky Top Summer League (yes, I skipped studying for tests and doing schoolwork to do those). However, at first I underestimated how much work blogging actually can be.
So when lawvol approached me (figuratively) about joining forces with him, it was a no-brainer. I have enjoyed writing here at the Gate and I just want to give some props to lawvol for having me on here and for helping me when I bug him about the simplest of issues. And of course thank you to yourselves, the readers (if you’re still actually reading this). Who knows if my blogging will actually help the journalism career I’m hoping for/working towards/trying to gain experience for, but I’ve certainly enjoyed it and I’m glad I decided to begin with it.
OK, enough of those little bits of business, now onto this little list. This will be a little different than the other two I’ve done, as in I’m writing this, I’m not limiting myself to what pops into my mind when I think back of the past year in sports. I was able to narrow my hatred for Alabama down to five and the hope of the Vols’ hoops season to 10, but this is a whole year we’re talking here. I’ll try to keep it as short as I can. Anyways, here goes…
1) Good-bye and thank you Coach Fulmer: Well duh. The only Tennessee football coach I’ve pretty much ever known fell victim to a failed replacement of David Cutcliffe and the second losing season in the last four years. It’s been the toughest year as a Tennessee fan I have been a part of by far, but it ended very sweet with the home win over Kentucky.
2) Hello, Lane Kiffin: Fulmer’s replacement has me excited, and I know I ain’t the only one. Some are skeptical, but the Blackjack General (kudos, lawvol) has the fire that I think this program needs. He and his staff have plenty of work to do to return to the level of competing with Florida and the growing empire in Tuscaloosa, but so far, so good…
3) Being #1 for less than two days is still better than never being #1…: This goes way back to February, and the 66-62 #2-over-#1 win by Tennessee at Memphis. I had to cover/get audio for this game for the radio station sports show I was involved in last spring, and it was just fun to watch and see in person. That, and being in the middle of the aftermath right outside the locker room and on the FedEx Forum floor trying to be “professional” is undoubtedly a highlight of this past year.
4) 2008 SEC basketball champs: Need anything else be said? And to do it in Gainesville after getting blitzed in the first half was icing. I also covered that last home game against Carolina, so watching the whole net-cutting and t-shirt deal was a highlight.
5) Fan apathy: Honestly, this was probably the biggest factor to Fulmer’s firing. I have made my thoughts on the student attendance and the whole paying for tickets well known through this site (try this). This video (I wouldn’t dare actually post it) was the lowest point for me as a Tennessee fan in my life. I must admit, I left well before it, but I didn’t want to be a apart of that. I commend you if you did…
6) Chris Lofton: Seeing this guy get to play in person for two years was a treat. Talk about a role model, he had cancer, didn’t tell anyone for completely unselfish purposes, and still had a pretty good season and was an integral part of the SEC Title run for the Vols. I have his #5 jersey on my wall of my room in my apartment, and it will be hanging in TBA’s rafters soon enough.
7) JaJuan Smith, too: Walk-on to nearly making the Mavericks. The best part of watching Juanny the past two years of college was that he made it look so fun. From his rainbow threes to pestering defense and occasionaly bonehead turnover, I’ll never forget this guy and what he was to the Tennessee program.
Championship #8: I have to give Pat Summit and the Lady Vols some love. I never go to any of their games, but I do know they exist. That senior class dominated and Candace Parker, well, she’s just awesome.
9) Eric Berry: The dude is just a BAMF. My four years of college may be four of the worst in Tennessee history, but at least I got to see this guy play. Seriously, he was reason enough to watch as the awful 2008 season went down the toilet. His pick-six against Mississippi State might have been the craziest moment of the student section this past year (yeah, indicating how bad the season truly was…). List of guys he almost killed in 2008: Tyler Donovan, Taylor Embree, Knowshon Moreno, Marquis Maze, and that’s off the top of my head. If a team had 22 Eric Berrys, they would never lose. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll like playing in Monte Kiffin’s defense enough to stay for his senior year…
10) Monte Kiffin: Sweet! Most respected defensive coordinator in the NFL? Yes please.
11) The Streak: Tennessee has now won 37 straight home games in Thompson-Boling Arena. A couple of teams nearly broke it (Ole Miss, Kentucky, Belmont), but it’s still going strong. I still have never left that arena having seen Tennessee lose. It was empty four years ago, now this streak. Could Gonzaga end it a week from tonight?
12) Construction: If you visited Knoxville this past year, you know what I mean. The stadium. Glocker. The Baker Center. Neyland. The TBA facelift. Lindsay Nelson. Heck, even I-40 has been closed since May…
13) Losses I witnessed in person: Louisville (Sweet 16 game in Charlotte), Florida, Auburn (nearly fell asleep in the third quarter), Alabama, Wyoming…
14) My love for the NBA: It gets a bad rap for the most part, but you can’t tell me you’re a true fan of the game of basketball and not like the NBA. Before this past season, I never really followed it other than the playoffs and the handful of Grizzlies games I saw in my high school days. Now, I just plain love it. These guys are ridiculous. I could watch LeBron James play every night. The Lakers-Celtics finals capped off an amazing playoffs and it’s shaking up to be a great season this year too.
15) Wyoming: I saw them beat Tennessee 13-7 in Knoxville. They were 1-7 in the Mountain West and fired their coach. Ouch…
16) UCLA: Kevin Craft is worse than me for Heisman! really wasn’t as good as we made him look. The beginning of the end…
17) This play:
18) These dunks:
19) Redeem Team Wins Gold: The highlight of the Beijing Olympics for me. Yes, I watched every minute of every one of their games. They were not going to be denied and watching these guys play together and with a serious sense of urgency was well worth it. Thank you, LeBron, D-Wade, Kobe, CP3, Bosh, Howard, Boozer, D-Will, Melo, Redd, Tayshaun, Coach K and staff.
20) The tornado that almost killed me: I’m getting lazy, so just click here. If you’re too lazy to do that, you’re worse than me I was in the Georgia Dome for the SEC Tournament when that tornado owned downtown Atlanta.
21) Michael Phelps: Second best part of the Olympics. The relay the U.S. stole from the trash-talking French and the race he won from nowhere had me up and yelling at the TV.
22) Scotty Hopson, Bobby Maze, Emmanuel Negedu, Renaldo Woolridge: They’re only going to get better…
23) This NFL season: I don’t get too pumped about pro football other than for fantasy purposes, but this was a fun season to watch. It came down to the end and I can honestly justify about six teams going all the way. Miami went from 1-15 to the playoffs and nobody’s laughing at the Falcons now. And those drama queens in Dallas are watching it all…
24) Jerod Mayo: Any time a Vol gets drafted in the Top 10…and then dominates as a rookie, I’m pumped…
25) Shaun Ellis: This was just plain funny…
26) Tyler Smith and J.P. Prince: Two transfers are huge parts of Tennessee hoops in 2008 and going forward. Thanks to Tyler for his clutch makes against Ole Miss and Memphis State. This year’s team is his team, and it took Prince hurting himself to make us see how important he is to this team.
27) The Olympics: Yeah, they were about all I watched for that two week stretch this summer.
28) VolQuest/Rivals: I can’t lie, I have spent countless hours procrastinating and wasting time on the message boards. If you have done it too, you know their addictive powers…
29) Jonathan Crompton: Well, there’s not much to say, but most of the Tennessee fanbase thinks he’s the worst QB to ever wear orange. Hell, he couldn’t even hand the ball off against Florida and Auburn. The Auburn game might have been the worst game ever played by a QB – my goodness was it ugly. When he entered the South Carolina after Nick Stephens threw an awful pick-six, ESPN showed his stats for the year – he had thrown for 666 yards. Yikes. Yet, that pass to Denarius Moore against Kentucky…reason for hope? I mean, he’s got an equal chance of starting next year as the other QBs Tennessee has. I’m just saying…
30) And finally, Mario Chalmers: Tiger High/John Calipari = EPIC FAIL…
HAPPY 2009 TO YOU FROM US HERE AT GATE 21!!!

Sports Blog Heisman Trophy Ballot
Well, Shotgun over at The Blue Workhorse has decided that the world of sports bloggers should have a voice in the Heisman Trophy selection process. Given the fact that the Heisman committee apparently doesn’t agree, Blue Workhorse has asked members of the sports blogosphere to weigh in with their own ballots for the Heisman Trophy. Given the fact that I am all about using the great ideas of others to obscure the fact that I often lack the ability for intelligent thought, here’s my ballot on behalf of the Gate:
1) Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee:
I know this will be labeled a “homer” vote, but—as Will at SESB pointed out—I am not the only one who feels this way. I really cannot possibly describe why my vote would be for Berry better than it was described in the above article which wrote:
The Vols’ athletic outlier plays the game like it’s on a sheet of ice and he’s the only one that brought skates. … Berry is the flower that’s sprouted in a compost heap of a year.
Berry has posted gaudy numbers this year with 7 interceptions for the season (12 all-time) and now holds the record for all-time SEC interception return yards. Furthermore, he just won the SEC Defensive Player of the Year Award, as well as being a finalist for the Lott Trophy, despite the fact that the Tennessee Volunteers were far-from-impressive as a team. Oh, and did I mention he’s only a sophomore?
His stats (I believe) through the end of the season are as follows:
| Year | G | UT | AT | TT | SCK | TFL | FF | FR | PBU |
| 2007 | 14 | 57 | 29 | 86 | - | 2 | 1 | 2 | 4 |
| 2008 | 12 | 44 | 28 | 72 | 1.5 | 7 | - | - | 6 |
| Totals | 26 | 101 | 57 | 158 | 1.5 | 9 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
|
Int. Returns |
KO Returns |
| Year | G | No | Yds | TD | No | Yds | TD |
| 2007 | 14 | 5 | 222 | 1 | - | - | - |
| 2008 | 12 | 7 | 265 | 2 | 2 | 32 | 0 |
| Totals | 26 | 12 | 487 | 3 | 2 | 32 | 0 |
|
Rushing |
Receiving |
| Year | G | Att | Yds | Avg | TD | No | Yds | Avg | TD |
| 2007 | 14 | - | - | - | - | - | - | - | - |
| 2008 | 12 | 7 | 37 | 5.3 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 3.0 | 0 |
| Totals | 26 | 7 | 37 | 5.3 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 3.0 | 0 |
Despite being a Tennessee fan at heart, I simply think that Eric Berry is the most deserving (and outstanding) player in the country this year.
2) Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech:
Before the season, no one in the country expected the Texas Tech Red Raiders to give Texas a loss, garner a top-3 ranking, and to be in the mix for a Big 12 title. Some people crossed Harrell off their list after the Oklahoma loss, but I have been thoroughly impressed with both his numbers on the season, and his ability to lead his team in tough situations. What’s more, he did it at Texas Tech—I think that is significant.
3) Tim Tebow, QB, Florida:
I have to hand it to Tebow, he has put together another great season and will lead the Florida Gators into the BCS Championship Game. His stats are not as impressive as last year, but that doesn’t bother me all that much considering that the Gators were so one-dimensional last season. There are two reasons why he is not at the top of my list. First, he seemed to play a little too “laid back” prior to the Ole Miss loss. To his credit, however, he picked it up thereafter. Second, I think his passing accuracy simply isn’t as good from all locations on the field as demonstrated by Graham Harrell.
I am sure that I will be called a homer for this ballot, but the fact is that I do feel that Berry is most deserving. Of course, I am a moron…
At any rate, the results of the Sports Blog Heisman Trophy balloting will be posted over at The Blue Workhorse Thursday-ish. I’ll try to remember to post a link once everything is up.
Happy Birthday to Gate 21! One Year Old and Counting…
Aww, you shouldn’t have…
Yes, it’s true. Despite the limits of good taste, the conventions of grammar, the call of life’s obligations, and a complete lack of quality and talent, Gate 21 is one year old. As the birthday header makes clear, our mascot Gus is really excited. (To see the Birthday header, click here.)
It’s hard to believe that it has been one whole year since the very first post here at Gate 21 was published—a post that was monumental in its complete lack of substance. Well, at least it’s good to see that some things haven’t changed around here.
When I first typed those opening words: “Good Afternoon and Welcome to Neyland Stadium…” I really had no idea what I was getting myself into or what Gate 21 would become. I didn’t even know what I was starting—but, as I am wont to do, I decided to jump on in with no concept of what I was about.

The Words That Started it All:
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Those first few weeks of posts reflect that lack of direction…
Still, despite my cluelessness, here we are 12 months, over 300 posts, more than 86,000 visitors, countless wasted hours of my life, and endless examples of poor writing later and the Gate is still here—serving as the entry into my bizarre, inane, and orange tinted world.
Since starting out, I have learned a few things along the way:
Timing is Everything: The informational cycle in the blogosphere spanning from “cutting edge” to “washed-up and out-to-pasture” is just slightly shorter than the attention span of a 4 year old with ADHD who just consumed four bags of Skittles and washed them down with a Red Bull;
Know Your Audience: You can’t be everything to everybody, choose your niche and dedicate yourself to never failing to fail in that one area;
Never Take Yourself too Seriously: Always keep your tongue planted firmly in your cheek and show your willingness to fall on the sword (even if it is because you tripped over it); and
When All Else Fails, Cheap Sight Gags Work: Yes, the Tennessee Home for the Visually Offensive has served the Gate well.
Over the course of the last year, the Gate has also changed in more ways than I care to recount.

Our Mascot: Gus
In total, there have been more than twenty different headers from the boring original, to the current standard, to the patriotic, to the ridiculous, to the world of livestock, and a few others in between. We also added my tribute to Sam & Andy’s, our mascot, and Defender of the Faith, Gus, and so many other distractions and eyesores.
Blogging—at least blogging with some purpose—is a lot of work, much more than I ever realized. It entails endless hours of writing, editing, site maintenance, research, graphic design, code crunching, and observational brainstorming. Oh, and contrary to what you probably think, there is no money in it—the Gate currently makes Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac look like a good investment.
It is, however, a hell of a lot of fun…
You don’t do this because you want to get rich, you do it because it intrigues you, then you enjoy it, then you love it. It’s kind of like being addicted to crack (I think) or Tennessee Football (I know) sometimes you want to quit, but you can’t.
Fortunately, I’ve had a little help from Home Sweet Home and the Blazer Chronicles—which, on the whole has increased the quality of this joint immeasurably. In all seriousness, I have written a lot of complete crap over the course of a year. There is a lot of stuff which is hardly worth reading. There are a few things, however, that I am proud of. Hopefully, the few of you out there that regularly step inside Gate 21 enjoyed the good with the bad.
Hmm… I guess Mike Hamilton doesn’t care much for Gate 21…
Most importantly, however, I have made a lot of good friends over the course of the year, and got reacquainted with a few that I had forgotten about. From fellow bloggers, to commenters, to flamers, I have genuinely appreciated the support and the criticism.
This first year of editing and publishing Gate 21 has been as much a learning experience as it has anything. That is obvious, considering that I started a blog which was originally focused exclusively on college football with only 2 weeks remaining in the 2007 season. Hopefully, everyone out there in internet-land has enjoyed it a little. If not, well, sometimes ignorance is bliss.
Anyway, thanks to all of you that have taken the time visit the Gate, thanks to all of you who have commented on a story or post, thanks to all of you who have either directly or behind the scenes given me a little help along the way.
This first year has been fun, hopefully the second will be even better.
In the meantime, in the words of Joel over at RTT, his sidekick Jackson the Mule, and our mascot Gus, all I can say is this:
“Woo!”
Thanks for a great first year. Hopefully there’s even more to come in the next 12 months.
