This was a great game!!! one of two Vols Gators matchups I have attended. the other being the 45-3 thrashing in 90. for this one the only tix I could get a hold of were from a gator fan online. So there I was sitting all the way at the top in the Fla section, all decked out from head to toe in orange. I couldnt get to the field because of all the open mouthed lizard fans!!! Okay am I just full of Orange kool-aid or is it a sign that CBS has been showing replays of the 2001 game all month and that the game is on 9-19 same as in ‘98. I think its an omen!!! GO BIG ORANGE BEAT THE GATORS!!!

This is the first Tennessee football game I ever remember watching. I guess I was 9ish at the time (I have vague memories of the SEC championship game from the year before and the ugly game after that) but I had been raised those 9 years by two Tennessee alum, sitiated as I am a bit off-center of Tobacco Road near Wake Forest University. While I’m not as die-hard as some Vol fans (comes with living a 6 hour drive away .. I’ve only been to Neyland Stadium once (Fresno State game, 2nd row from the top)) I can say that was easilly my most loved childhood memory — until my mom taped over the game -.- We still have two Florida State game on a pair of old VHS’s and a bag of Tostitos from that year though, and a few magnets hanging around. Thanks for the great article, I can’t remember most of the details from this game, but it was a welcome remembrance of times past.

What an accurate description that is. That makes me think I should have described the night as being “akin to riding Satan’s Llama.” Of course, knowing the sort of people who read this site, I’m sure they’d find some hidden sexual connotation in that.

Satan’s Crotch…that’s pretty darn accurate, I would guess. 1998 was my first year marching in “The Pride”, let alone with the UF game being my first ever experienced from that perspective. I hadn’t felt ‘hot’ until that night while wearing a 20 lb llama suit!
