Headlines, Links & Lies… the Terelle Pryor Edition

This just in…
Digital Headbutt is reporting that Terelle Pryor Commits to … Duke?!
In one of the most shocking twists the college football recruiting world has ever seen, Terrelle Pryor announced, completely out of left field, that he was going to enroll as a two-sport athlete at Duke University.
According to Pryor, this shouldn’t come as a shock at all.
“I chose Duke for many, many reasons”, said the prospect to a stunned audience at his press conference in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. “I have openly said to the media that I would prefer to become a professional basketball player than a professional football player. Duke gives me the opportunity to do that which the other schools I considered simply cannot provide.”
When asked why he did not choose Ohio State (who has enjoyed recent basketball success), Pryor said “First of all, it’s cold up here. I was thinking of going to a big Ten school to be in a major conference and be close to my family. But then I thought, “Can I really stand another winter like this? F–k that s–t.”

Meanwhile … on a Hockey related note, Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers, had his throat slit accidentally during a game, and there is even a YouTube of the incident, which is pretty bloody, as posted over at Two Minutes for Blogging.
WARNING, this is a bit graphic if you are squeamish!!!
Damn, I bet that hurts! I hope he is okay.

Funny stuff on the Pryor thing.
On a much more serious hockey note, there was a goalie named Clint Malarchuk who got his jugular slashed open in the middle of a game. He survived, if for only one reason: he happened to be defending the goal on the same side of the ice as the ambulance. They estimated that the extra 20 or so seconds it would have taken to get the ambulance over would have cost him his life.
Since Zednik was able to get to his own bench and be escorted off on his own two feet, I’m certain he’ll be fine. Given the way that play occurred, he’s really lucky that it wasn’t any worse. He won’t be playing for a few days while they let the thing heal over, and he’ll probably be wearing a goalie-level neck protector for a while after that, but the NHL knows how to handle throat cuts. As well they should.
To close the matter (so to speak),
Zednik was stabilized in the hospital last night and is on his way to a full recovery. He was basically running on pure adrenaline when he made it to the bench. By that time, his teammates said he was incoherent and didn’t even have his eyes open. The NHL was willing to call the game (there were 10 minutes left), but the teams were willing to play on, so they finished it. As best as I understand the news articles, the player whose skate gave the cut (Olli Joniken) didn’t play anymore in the game after seeing the replay. It was in no way his fault, but I couldn’t imagine how bad that must have felt to see the replay. Zednik may need physical recovery, but Joniken will probably get a couple days off for mental and emotional recovery.
Watching the replay, I don’t think Joniken could have managed to hit Zednik this way if he tried. I t was simply one of those freakish accidents. Hopefully, Zednik will make a complete recovery
Zednik will be fine. Whether he continues to play is purely a function of whether he’s been mentally scarred enough, but I just don’t see that happening. The Malarchuk example is the gold standard for this. Watch that one if you can handle squeamish – it’s more explicit than the Zednik video. But the thing to remember is this: Malarchuk got over 300 stitches, but spent only one night in the hospital. He was back in practice in 4 days and even played in the final game of the season – less than two weeks after having his jugular cut open.
I don’t post this as any kind of gore-fest or some sick one-upsmanship “oh, yeah, look at this” type thing. I post this to show that Zednik will be just fine. This is something that the medical community has a good handle on, and Zednik got the attention that he needed fast enough to ensure a full recovery.
But Joniken’s going to be feeling really bad for a long time.
