Lawdy, Lawdy — Here Comes da’ BasketVols
The Tommy Bowl was a rockin’ on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 7 Vols beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 74-69 in front of a sellout crowd. Despite going cold on offense early in the second-half, and allowing Ohio State to go on a 16-6, the Vols managed to counter with their own second-half 27-6 run and beat the visiting Buckeyes in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Sweet Sixteen game. Down the stretch — as has been the case with the Vols all season, it was their defense and rebounding which made the difference, and help them to finally put Ohio State away with under a minute to play in the game.
The scoring honors were shared among four Vols: JaJuan Smith had 15 points, Chris Lofton added 13, Tyler Smith and Ramar Smith both had 12 points each.
With this — their 11th straight win — the Vols improve to 16-1 on the season. Tennessee has now won their last 26 games in Knoxville. This is only the second time in school history that Tennessee has started the season 16-1.
As the Vols were finishing the Buckeyes in Knoxville, the Maryland Terrapins were finishing off the No. 1 ranked UNC Tarheads, in Chapel Hill. Thus, Tennessee can hope to push even higher in this week’s Basketball polls. If Tennessee can beat Kentucky at Rupp Arena this week, the Vols might even find themselves in the top 3 come next week — especially in light of the fact they currently have the No. 1 RPI rating in the country.
Once again, the Tennessee BasketVols have found a way to win. It is so refreshing to see a team in orange which simply refuses to give up. Given the fact that Duke Crews now looks ready to resume his role in the lineup and the fact that Chris Lofton is slowly inching his way back to his form of late 2006-07, the rest of the season looks very bright indeed.
Next up Kentucky, at Lexington on Tuesday Night…
Go Vols!!! Beat the Ken-sucky-Hairball-Pukin’-Wildcats!!!
