The word is out that Trooper Taylor is leaving Tennessee to take the Offensive Coordinator position at Oklahoma State.

Still no word on who is likely to replace David Cutcliffe. Looks like there will be some serious shakeups on the Vols staff during the off-season.

So Nick Saban is talking to West Virginia about the head coaching job…

If you ask me, that is a load of crap. Now, that is not to say that I don’t believe that he is talking to WVU through his agent — quite the contrary. I am sure that Saban is talking to the Mountaineers, and probably talking meaningfully. The reason for this twofold.

First, with the exception of the Tennessee game — in which the Vols made the tide look like world-beaters (No I didn’t say wife-beaters. See, I have some discretion) – Alabama pretty much sucked this season. Now slick Nicky is making enough money to drink nothing but 25 Year Old Macallan Scotch, snort 300 lines of cocaine a day, and have a harem of high-class prostitutes at his beck and call. The problem is that he isn’t exactly showing that he’s worth it. In fact, based upon what USA Today figured out, Nick made a whopping $583,867 per win this year — making him the second most overpaid coach in college football this year. Thus, I figure Nicky is trying to position himself such that West Virginia’s interest in his coaching skills, demonstrates his virtues as the Bammer head coach and his abilities as one of the greatest football minds of our time (Kinda sounds likes Lex Luthor to me…). If Nicky talks to West Virginia, then he — by reverse innuendo — feels he can convince the powers that be in Tuscaloosa that he deserves to keep his job. I guess this is just another way to try and keep Bama from figuring out what a lemon they have been sold. Considering that Nick convinced them in the first instance that he was worth a king’s ransom, it stands to reason that either he is pretty damn persuasive, or the Alabama athletics department is peopled with idiots — I’ll let you decide. (Of course it only took Joe Willie Namath 42 years to earn his degree from that venerable institution… but I digress.)

Second, but perhaps first in Nicky’s mind is probably the fact that he can not only secure a contract extension through talking to West Virginia, but he might also be able to garner — imagine this — more money! I am sure Nick will be quick to point out to the Bammer’s that despite the fact that Alabama the goat of college football for the amount of money they paid him to come to “return the Tide to dominance,” he deserves a raise. I can hear him explaining how, sure Bama is the has been the laughing-stock of college football this year, but everyone is laughing — that’s publicity, and that’s good! Sure, the Tide lost to Mississippi State and Joe’s School of Cosmetology and Small Engine Repair, but everyone saw them lose those games. Saban has propelled the Crimson Tide program forward and returned it to the media spotlight. Thus, he deserves a $ 425 million dollar raise, and a free night with the university president’s youngest daughter.

I am sure that Nick has no intention of going to West Virginia, not that I really care. I just hate it that even after he scored the money from Bama, he’s still pushing for more.

Of course, now that I think of it, Saban does kind of look like a used car salesman…

I always thought that I had to pay a lot to the VASF for my season tickets in Knoxville, but I’ve decided that I may be getting a bargain.

As you may have heard, Jerry Jones the oh-so-cute-and-cuddly owner of the Dallas Cowboys is now building a new stadium for the Cowboys. This is not going to be your typical stadium, mind you, but rather a giant orgy of stadium construction — Texas style. With a price tag of 1 billion dollars, Jerry World is destined to be a virtual palace which will thrill the senses and boggle the mind. Given the scope of the amenities which will be included in the 80,000 seat structure, fans will be able to enjoy countless food offerings and numerous entertainment choices — including 3 suspended JumboTrons and a huge JumboTron facing out into the freakin’ parking lot. In fact, the current plan is to no longer even have the Cowboys play games, but rather simply allow fans to come to the stadium and bask in Jerry Jones’ magnificent greatness. That’s fine by me … I hate the Cowboys (with apologies to Jason Witten)

The Vols downed Western Kentucky last night 88 -82. Of note in the game was JaJuan Smith’s 1,000th point as he led the team in scoring with 19 points. Brian Williams followed with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

The Vols face UNC-Asheville on Wednesday, 19 December — tip-off at 7:30.

I just can’t wait for the conference games to start!

According to Georgia Sports Blog it looks like Trooper Taylor may also be looking at leaving to go take a position as the Offensive Coordinator at Baylor: More Good News from Vol Land: Trooper Taylor Leaving? (sounds like the Georgia folks are less than sad about this). I sincerely hope that Tennessee doesn’t end up losing both Cutcliffe and Trooper in the same week. That would be a major hit on the Vols’ recruiting.

Assuming that Cucliffe is in fact leaving — which is hardly a settled matter given the fact it was previously reported by the Knoxville Snooze Slantinel that Cutcliffe had already accepted a job that he hadn’t even been offered — I wonder who Tennessee will look to have replace Cutcliffe. I imagine that Trooper could use the Baylor opportunity to try and leverage himself a position as Offensive Coordinator. Of course the last time Tennessee promoted a long-time assistant to that position internally (Randy Sanders when Cutcliffe left last time)… well, the graph below pretty much speaks for itself.

Let’s hope we don’t go down that road again…

I hate to see Cutcliffe leave — I am not convinced that Duke is a good opportunity for him, but I wish him nothing but success if he goes. I can hardly blame him for wanting his own program and the huge raise that would follow.

At any rate, the next 24 hours should be interesting in Big Orange Country, and down the road from me in Durham.
